Areas in Laea Wake

Various Locations within the Laea Wake Universe

Orphan Borough

The definition of a 'borough' itself, as understood by Wikipedia, is "a self-governing township... Usually a borough is a single town with its own local government. However in some large cities it is a sub-division of the city (e.g. London, New York)." This borough is essentially a network of smaller neighborhoods. It works on a sort of semi-Marxist idealism, with no large firms or buildings, rather small operations, family owned but capitalistic nonetheless. The skyscrapers are largely elaborate apartment complexes. Even though there are only a handful of individuals within the universe that really serve a purpose to it's creator, the Masks, the Borough is a functioning city. The people who live here are filler. They are the people on the streets you never heed. They are not Characters. They are not Masks. They are more like scenery, and generally exist just so that the machine that is the universe itself can function to its fullest extent. The Orphan Borough is a very inner-city, Sci-Fi influenced environment with a lot of Asian and historic-American (specifically 19th-century) influence. There are many universes in literature and media that have been quite similar, such as Firefly/Serenity or Blade Runner. Demons run free here as well, as they do almost everywhere.

The Orphan Borough is, quite simply, where the Orphans are. The Orphans are just that, Orphans, street children. The Orphan Borough serves as a sort of graduate education for life as a Mask. Life at the Safehouse. It came about when Miranda as a young child with an overactive imagination would create more Children than could possibly have been cared for, and so when new Children are born they first begin life in the Borough, having to fend for themselves. If they make it to the Safehouse, which is legend among all residents of the universe, they may be adopted.

It's key to know that Terra, as the mask of Insanity, is only loosely connected to any natural rules or physics that might be applied to this universe, because she is the embodiment of chaos and dissociation from said reality, and each individual manifests the world immediately around it based on their nature, their desires, and their actions- something that could be known as the absolute inalienable natural law of Laea Wake. So when Terra dreams a particularly real dream, she will essentially transport herself there, because her whole being will exist there for a moment and it becomes her reality, then is manifested as such according to the absolute law.

In the beggining of the first section of the Stories, only Murmur (Terra) and Rain are left. However, later three new Children are born: Jack, Sunny, and Kaiya. When Terra was transported one night through Dreaming into the Borough, she met up with them. Seven, who was a Mask in the time before Jenna, the Mask of Memory, was with them. They helped her get back to the Safehouse, quite a long journey, and they were adopted, making four Children in addition to Terra, Rain, and later, Violyn.

Lake Waco'ae

Lake Waco'ae is a small home-town Borough north of the Orphan Borough and Kiriau City. Warm. Fuzzy. The whole lot. Sometimes the more fortunate Orphans find their way here. Haven, the prototype of the Safehouse is here, as well. It's idyllic. Take the metaphor mentioned previously: "The Orphan Borough serves as a sort of graduate education for life as a Mask. Life at the Safehouse"... If the Orphan Borough were like graduate school, this would be kindergarten. There's a strength in this Town which is unmatched. Nothing can touch you here.

Hawks-Halifax Harbor

This is one of the larger townships/neighborhoods of the greater urban area defined as the Orphan Borough, and is in fact large enough to be termed a city in and of itself. Nearby landmarks are Hawk's Ocean and D'Arangia Harbor. Within this area are all of the major bureaucratic/administrative/government-related establishments similar to those in Providence. Since I'm developing the Universe more in Book Two, including more of the Steampunk and Fantasy elements of it, I'm going to in turn attempt to play up mundane establishments more often, and not just the New Haven Safehouse, such as the Hawks-Halifax Harbor Hallowed Heart Hospital (I just couldn't resist that, sorry), the Train Station (the Hoodlebug), and the yet-to-be-named Post Office (will prove more interesting then it sounds), various Parks, Zoos, Schools, and Recreational Facilities, Taxi Service (the Hagane Hack, or something), and Museum (Historical Hall, perhaps?).

D'Arangia... Harbor?

D'Arangia... Harbor, or... something... is a smaller township within/outside of Hawks-Halifax Harbor and is yet another neighborhood of the Orphan Borough. There's no official name for this area as of yet, which is the reason for the strange title. It should be D'Arangia Harbor, but I don't know about having a Harbor within a Harbor... This is the setting for the new Safehouse- New Haven. However, none of the aforementioned administrative establishments are going to be set in D'Arangia WhateverICallIt.
